Take Control of Your End-of-the-Semester-Stress

Stress Solutions
By Jessica Dennis, Lifestyle
Projects, papers, finals, sports, classes, meetings, work…is everything piling up at the end of the semester? Do you find yourself losing sleep, procrastinating more than usual, fighting more with friends, and changing your eating habits? All college students face these common problems at the end of a semester. Your list of things to do usually gets longer at the end of the semester, and with that, comes extra stress, which causes you to lose sleep, become moody and change your daily habits. So what can you do to find some relief?

The solution to relieving stress does not come in one easy answer. There are actually several easy solutions to ending your end-of-the-semester-stress. One of the best ways to relieve stress is to make a ‘to do list’. Making a list helps you organize what needs to be finished before the semester ends. Once the list is made, you can see when deadlines for your papers, projects and other assignments are due. With the list in hand, you can begin working on completing the items listed. Once an assignment is finished, cross it off. This helps you to see things are being done and allows you to feel accomplished.

Another great way to relieve stress is to relax. Make time for yourself. When you find yourself working constantly, your stress levels tend to increase. By making time to relax and have fun you allow yourself to step away from the work. Relaxing can be as simple as taking a short nap. Other common ways to relax include spending time with friends, going to a movie, shopping, taking a day trip to the beach or taking a walk.

Another solution is by maintaining daily sleep, eating, and exercise habits. By having a constant balance in your habits, your body becomes set in a rhythmic pattern, which allows both the body and mind more capabilities to handle stress. Even if you do not have time to eat and sleep the recommended amount, you can have balanced habits by going to sleep and getting up at the same time each day. Eating healthy foods and having your meals around the same time each day also creates daily patterns. Regular exercise helps in relieving stress as well. Exercise releases endorphins, which help the body feel happy and relaxed.

As students, we all must deal with end-of-the-semester-stress. Although the work is inevitable, the stress can be avoided. By making a ‘to do list’, relaxing, and regulating daily habits, stress levels will decrease and your work will be done, all without losing sleep, friends, food, and most importantly your sanity.
