Moore & Whaley to Participate in Poet Series

Gilbert-Chappell Distinguished Poet Series Scheduled

Mount Olive College’s Lenard Moore, assistant professor of English, and Morgan Whaley, a senior English communications major, have been selected to participate in the Gilbert-Chappell Distinguished Poet Series. The event will be part of the Walking into April Poetry Days sponsored by the North Carolina Poetry Society, Barton College and the Gilbert-Chappell Distinguished Poet Award. The sixth annual event is scheduled to begin at -9:15 on Saturday, April 11 at the Sam and Marjorie Ragan Writing Center on the campus of Barton College.

Moore teaches creative writing, advanced poetry writing, and African American literature. He also directs the College’s Literary Festival and serves as faculty advisor to the journal Trojan Voices. Moore is president of the Haiku Society of America and executive chairman of the NC Haiku Society. His works include Forever Home, Desert Storm: A Brief History, and A Temple Looming. He is a winner of the 2006 Sam Ragan Fine Arts Award and the 2008 Raleigh Medal of Arts award.

In addition to Moore, Nancy King a bootstrap poet and author of two collections and over 249 published poems, and Marty Silverthorne, author of several chapbooks including Dry-Skin Messiah and Pot Liquor Promises, will share their thoughts on the creative process, writing and re-writing and publishing.

During his presentation Moore has selected Morgan Whaley to read from her works and be acknowledged as a Gilbert-Chappell Distinguished Student Poet.

Whaley, a native of Beulaville, is the daughter of Lee and Lisa Whaley. She is a member of the Mount Olive College softball team. The goal of the Gilbert-Chappell Distinguished Poet Series (GCDPS) is to foster the reading, writing, and enjoyment of poetry across the state as stated in the mission of the North Carolina Poetry Society (NCPS). Moore and Whaley will also present a featured poetry reading on the evening of April 23, at the Wayne County Public Library Main Branch in Goldsboro.
