March 27th-29th turned out to be an unforgettable weekend for some of Mount Olive's own students and faculty. Scarlet Price, Jelena Atkins, Brittany Miller, Dr. Holland-Toll, Dr. Gall, Mrs. Gall, Dr. Lamm and Mrs. Lamm spent a three-day, two night adventure in Morehead City, with trips to Fort Macon, the Coast Guard Station at Fort Macon and the NC Aquarium at Atlantic Beach.

The invitation to go on the trip was extended to all freshmen and sophomores in the Honors Program. This is just one of the many opportunities offered by the Honors Program.

Freshman Scarlet Price is considering a career in the Coast Guard as an environmental scientist. "Visiting the station gave me another option for my career opportunities," she stated. "I love the water."

Everyone got to go out with the Coast Guard on one of their smaller boats and one group experienced a routine stop. Dr. Holland-Toll thought it was, "Very unexpected. The thrill of the turns in the boat ride was exciting!"

The "Lifesavers of the Crystal Coast" were very friendly, dedicated and good looking. Mrs. Gall thought they were, "Buff, had cool uniforms and a lot of interesting information to share."

Dr. Gall pointed out, "The military has great benefits and the pay is good. People do not typically see the U.S. government and the environment together. The Coast Guard helps merge these two ideas."

The MOC group also toured Fort Macon and learned a little more about Dr. Lamm's family history. Dr. Lamm's great great grandfather was a Confederate soldier who was captured and released by Union soldiers once the Union forces took over Fort Macon. Dr. Lamm even brought along of a picture of his great great grandfather, adding more sentimental value to the visit. In addition, Dr. Lamm provided a 15-minute lesson about the history, importance and development of Fort Macon into a National Park.

Jelena Atkins said she really enjoyed the trip to the aquarium and the Coast Guard. "It was exciting and fun," Atkins stated, "The aquarium has added new exhibits since I was there last." Some of the favorite attractions of the students and faculty were the baby jellyfish, the otters and getting to pet the skates.

Besides all the sight seeing, the group took a slight detour to walk on the beach and climb the rocks. The honors group experienced a little act of "Civil Disobedience" when they opted to climb some rocks along the beach.

Not only did the weekend turn out to be unforgettable, but it also gave everyone a chance to eat some fantastic food. Dr. Gall prepared Saturday night meal which included shrimp, green beans, clam chowder, Texas toast and lemon meringue pie.

This trip would not have been possible without the efforts of Dr. Holland-Toll, Dr. Gall, Dr. Lamm, Dr. Jordon and Dr. Dyer. On behalf of everyone at the Trojan Times and the Morehead City group, thank you for allowing such opportunities.
