MOC Safety Department Hosts Seminar

On March 11, the Mount Olive College Safety Department held a Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence Seminar. Deputy Betty Lance of Wayne County Sheriff Department was the guest speaker. Deputy Lance worked with Mount Olive Police Department for over 10 years and has been with the Sheriff Department for over 6 years.

Some of the key points covered in the seminar:

  • Domestic Violence is happening in colleges.
  • Each state looks at domestic violence differently.
  • North Carolina does not look at same sex domestic violence.
  • Wayne County, sexual assault has escalated.
  • Sexual assault is a misdemeanor.
  • Females have gotten aggressive and it is considered sexual assault.
  • More females than males are being charged with sexual assault.
  • Texting has become a form of sexual assault and is considered a harassing phone call.
  • More sexual assault is occurring by drinking, with the addition of chemicals mixed in drinks.
  • Three years ago North Carolina came in the top ten in the United States for sexual assault. North Carolina has almost topped New York City in sexual assault.
  • First time offenders can be shipped to the Department of Corrections.
In closing, Deputy Lance encouraged students to be careful with their choices, to report assaults immediately, and to not be a victim!
