Fireside Chat

Housing Coordinator Michelle Thomas Briefs Students on Pods
By Jessica Dennis, Campus News
Monday, February 16, 2009 - Official housing information was released during SGA’s monthly fireside chat this past Monday. Housing coordinator, Michelle Thomas, briefed students about important housing information, which included the layout of the new pods, the housing process, and the lottery system.

The new apartments will consist of twenty-three, three story apartments. The first floor apartments will be one story with a kitchen, living room, four bedrooms, and two bathrooms. The second level will consist of two story apartments. Some will consist of a first floor with a kitchen, living room, and all four bedrooms, and the second story will house two bathrooms. Other two story apartments will feature a first floor with a kitchen, living room, two bedrooms and one bathroom, with the second story having two bedrooms and one bathroom. The new apartments will be set up like a gated community, in which one will need an access card to enter the pod complex. Each apartment’s front door opens by using this access card and each room in the apartments open with a key. Another feature of the new apartments is the choice of the five-meal plan.

With the addition of the pods, the housing process will be changing for the upcoming school year. This year housing is based on classification, so get your housing deposit in as soon as possible for best results. The housing deposit is $50 and must be paid in full at the Student Development Office by 4:00 pm on February 26. After paying the deposit, you will be instructed to complete a housing selection form. On this form, you sign up in groups of two or four. If you are going to live in the residence halls, you sign up in a group of two. If you are going live in the current or new apartments, you must sign up in a group of four. Next year there will be single rooms in the residence halls; however, spacing for these rooms is limited.

The next phase of the housing process is the lottery system. The lottery will be held for three nights. Each night there will only be one name per group in the drawing and two people from each group must come. During the first night, seniors and juniors from one’s housing group will attend. When a name is drawn, they will select where they wish to live, and that apartment or dorm room will be marked off. The second and third nights will work the same way, with sophomores coming the second night, and freshmen the third. Once a member of your group is selected, your spot is guaranteed and no one needs to come out for the other nights.

For instance, say your group consists of one senior, one junior and two sophomores. One the first night the senior and junior will come to the lottery. Only one of their names will be in the drawing. Once the name of the senior or junior are selected, they will come up select the apartment that group discussed choosing. Since a member of the group was chosen on the first night, they will not need to send the two sophomores on the second night. A good tip to remember is to have a few different apartments or rooms picked out in case your first is taken before your group member is selected.
